Response to Buffalo News Article

A Buffalo News article in Sunday’s 9/30/2012 Business section questioned the effectiveness of New York State’s deregulated utility industry. Customers utilizing an energy services company, ( ESCO ), were noted to have paid more for energy commodity compared to rates from National Grid. The article also cited the marketing ploy of some ESCO’s to offer a low 2-month introductory price and then raise pricing beyond the local utility rate.

The Energy Cooperative of America has successfully operated since 1997, when natural gas deregulation was initiated in New York State. Our market-based pricing system provides ECA members annual savings compared to local utility company rates. There are no long-term contracts and we never offer lower initial rates to lure potential members.

Annually, our members are provided a savings analysis which compares ECA rates to the regulated utility charges. We provide the monthly billing details to allow a direct comparison. We are proud of the consistent historical savings we have achieved for our residential and commercial customers. ECA will continue to provide our members favorable energy prices and excellent customer service.
